Mountain Runner Events are excited to announce a NEW event on one of South Africa’s iconic hiking trails, the Whale Trail. A trail that will make your heart beat with excitement. A trail that has a beauty like no other. A trail that will make every runner come alive.

The Whale Trail, a magnificent 5-day hiking trail along the southern cape coast, takes hikers along a 50km journey from the Potberg nature reserve to Koppie Alleen, in CapeNature’s flagship De Hoop Nature Reserve. The first 26km winds through fynbos covered mountains and streams, with panoramic views and stunning waterfalls. Mountain trails at its best. The trail then descends to the enchanting Noetsie Bay, turning west and winding along the rocky shores of the Indian Ocean, with a mix of beach and coasteering. Coastal trails at its best. With the mountains being home to the rare Cape Vulture and the coastline renown for it’s Southern Right Whales and an abundance of marine life, the trail is unrivalled for both beauty and wildlife.

For the first time ever in May 2014, trail runners will be allowed onto the 50km-hiking trail. “This trail is made in heaven for trail runners and encompasses everything that a trail runners heart could desire.” Race organizer, Tatum Prins. “Completing this will fill runners with a peace and sense of accomplishment like no other”.

CapeNature and Mountain Runner events have partnered to give trail runners an exclusive event experience and trail runners can now add the “Whale of Trail” onto their 2014 calendar. With the trail only accessible to hikers booking well in advance, this race presents a unique opportunity to tick off one of South Africa’s iconic trails, doing one of South Africa’s fastest growing past times, Trail Running. “This is an exciting opportunity to showcase the Whale Trail.” says Lucinda Witten, CapeNature Marketing Manager.

The 2014 event is scheduled for 10th May 2014 and is limited to only 150 runners. Mountain Runner Events will be working closely with CapeNature to ensure the management of the trail and environment during the staging of this event.

The title sponsor, leading footwear and apparel brand, Merrell, have formed a strong relationship with Mountain Runner events over the past three years. “Both companies are passionate about the outdoors and getting people outside.” Merrell SA Marketing manager, Liezel Jooste. “This event presents the ideal showcase for what we both stand for”. Nikwax, the presenting sponsor, is the Global leader in safe, high performance waterproofing, cleaning and conditioning for outdoor gear. Another perfect synergy with this inaugural event.
