Entries open this week for the Merrell Whale of Trail presented by Nikwax. Scheduled for the 10th May, the 50km trail run looks set to be one of the most eagerly awaited one day trail runs on the 2014 calendar and all indications are that the demand for the limited spots will be high.
The Whale of Trail will see 150 trail runners racing along Cape Nature’s iconic 5-day hiking Whale Trail, which along with the Otter Hiking trail, is rated as one of South Africa’s top hiking trails. The trail traverses De Hoop Nature Reserve, one of the Western Cape’s most unique and diverse reserves.
With a combination of mountain and coastal running, on a trail renowned for its diverse fynbos vegetation, magnificent dunes and whale watching opportunities, the Whale of Trail promises to be one of the most visually spectacular and varied trail races of the year. The first half of the route takes in the Potberg Mountains, offering wonderful views of the surrounding area, while winding through unique limestone fynbos. While the second half meanders along the coastline taking in secluded beaches, rock pools, caves, dunes and cliffs.
“In putting this event together, we have looked to make it as easy and simple as possible for competitors” says race organiser, Tatum Prins. “De Hoop is only a three hour drive from Cape Town and due to the nature of the route we don’t need to do any prologues. Entrants can leave Cape Town mid afternoon on the Friday and be home by lunch on Sunday.”
The race “village” will be at the main resort in the reserve, De Hoop Collection, with the starting point being at Potberg some 40km’s away and the finish being 15km’s away at Koppie Alleen. The race package will include dinners at the Friday night briefing and Saturday night prize giving, as well as a free food zone at the finish line. Transfers to and from De Hoop Collection to the start and finish points are also included. “We have tried to minimize the logistical admin for everyone entering.”, mentioned Tatum Prins. “De Hoop Collection have a great variety of accommodation options and are offering reduced rates for competitors.”
