The Merrell Whale of Trail announces a generous increase in 2017 prize money, incentivising runners across the country to make their way to the start line on 29th July 2017 at De Hoop Nature Reserve. The first male and female across the line will walk away with R15k each, a large difference to last year’s R3k.
“In first two years we gave R3000, R2000 and R1000 for the top three men and women respectively,” says Graham Bird, owner of Mountain Runner Events and Whale of Trail Race Director. “Last year we gave away a free entry to either this year’s event or the Hobbit, so this year is a “biggish” step up for us.”
2016 women’s winner, Tracey Campbell is thrilled about the news and believes it’s a fantastic incentive. “Prizes are always awesome, but getting cash is such an added bonus,” she says, “as trail running can be quite a costly endeavour.”
Of course it’s not just about the prize money, and if you know you’re about as likely to podium as Trump is to win the hearts of the world over, don’t be deterred from entering. The Whale of Trail condenses a beautiful five-day hike into a spectacular 53km trail through De Hoop Nature Reserve, an event that promises an exquisite myriad of scenery from fynbos to sandy beaches with unique vulture and whale sightings over a challenging route. “Despite the increase in prize money, these races are worth every penny,” says Campbell, “because you cannot buy the beauty of the trails and the amazing experience.”
